Malaysia Airlines signs MRO deal with India (Hyderabad Airport)
An agreement between Malaysia Airlines E&M and GMR Hyderabad International Airport will allow both companies to capitalise on the rapidly growing aviation market in India , the airline says in a statement.
With about 300 aircraft in service, the Indian aviation market is one of the fastest growing in the world. More than 200 new aircraft will be headed for India in the next two years, reaching 2000 within the next decade.
A memorandum of understanding signed by the two companies will see the establishment of a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organisation to provide maintenance services on narrow- and wide-body aircraft at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad, Hyderabad .
Malaysia Airlines executive director/chief financial officer Tengku Azmil Zahruddin describes the timing of the partnership, representing the airline's first foray into the Indian aircraft maintenance market, as perfect as the market is experiencing strong growth with manufacturers bullish on aircraft orders.
He says the current MRO providers in India are unable to cope with the requirements. "Currently, most aircraft are sent to Malaysia and other MRO providers overseas for heavy maintenance."
GMR Hyderabad International Airport CEO PS Nair says the MRO centre will be strategically located, close to the three main cities of New Delhi , Mumbai and Chennai. It will be able to handle all types of aircraft from light jets to super-jumbos.
As well as maintaining Malaysia Airlines, MASKargo, Firefly and MASwings' fleet, MAS E&M has more than 80 clients including Lufthansa, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Jet Airways, Qantas and Austrian Airlines.
